The third week of July 2026 opened with the India-UK trade deal finally coming into force and a fresh Cabinet nod for India’s semiconductor push, followed by a historic double at the international science Olympiads, India’s highest literary honour, the country’s first hydrogen-powered train, and the start of Parliament’s Monsoon Session.   1. India-UK CETA and Double Contribution Convention Come Into Force [Foreign Trade / Economy]

The India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) and the companion Double Contribution Convention (DCC) came into force on July 15, 2026, after being signed in London on July 24, 2025 and February 10, 2026 respectively. The UK will eliminate duties on 99% of Indian tariff lines, while India removes duties on about 90% of UK tariff lines; the DCC exempts Indian professionals on UK assignments from dual social-security contributions for up to five years.

Exam Tip: Know CETA’s 30 chapters cover far more than tariffs  digital trade, government procurement, and IP. Compare the exemption period under DCC (5 years) with similar India agreements. A strong UPSC GS-II/III and SSC CGL Economy topic.

  1. Union Cabinet Approves Semicon 2.0 with Rs 1.27 Lakh Crore Outlay [Economy / Science & Technology]

The Union Cabinet approved Semicon 2.0 on July 15-16, 2026, with a total outlay of Rs 1,27,500 crore to build on the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) launched in 2021. The programme rests on six pillars  design, manufacturing, packaging, supply chain, R&D and talent development. Under Semicon 1.0, 12 manufacturing units worth over Rs 1.64 lakh crore were approved, with Micron, Kaynes and CG Semi already in commercial production.

  1. India Wins 5 Gold Medals at 56th International Physics Olympiad, Joint World No. 1 [Science Education / Achievements]

All five members of India’s contingent  Kanishk Jain, Riddhesh Anant Bendale, Rishit Garg, Shresth Suraiya and Svarit Joshi  won gold medals at the 56th International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) 2026, held in Bucaramanga, Colombia from July 5-12, 2026. The clean sweep, among 381 students from 87 countries, earned India the joint World No. 1 rank alongside China, Kazakhstan, Russia, South Korea and Taiwan.

Exam Tip: Know that India’s Olympiad teams are selected and trained by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) under TIFR, Department of Atomic Energy. ‘Science Olympiad achievements’ is a recurring UPSC Prelims and SSC current-affairs theme.

  1. India Wins 4 Gold Medals at 58th International Chemistry Olympiad, Best-Ever Show [Science Education / Achievements]

India delivered its best-ever performance at the 58th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) 2026 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan (July 10-19), with all four team members  Debadatta Priyadarshi, Harshit Singla, Kabeer Chhillar and Sandeep Kuchi  winning gold medals. India finished joint first among 363 students from 93 countries, tied with China, Vietnam and an individual participant from Russia.

  1. R. Vairamuthu Conferred the 60th Jnanpith Award [Awards / Culture]

Tamil poet, lyricist and novelist R. Vairamuthu was conferred the 60th Jnanpith Award (for the year 2025), India’s highest literary honour, instituted in 1961 by the Bharatiya Jnanpith. He becomes the third Tamil writer to win the award after Akilan (1975) and D. Jayakanthan (2002), and the first to be recognised primarily for Tamil poetry. His novel Kallikkaattu Ithihasam earlier won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2003.

  1. PM Modi Flags Off India’s First Hydrogen-Powered Passenger Train [Railways / Green Mobility]

Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off India’s first indigenous hydrogen fuel cell-powered passenger train on July 17, 2026, on the 89-km Jind-Sonipat section of Northern Railway in Haryana. The 10-coach train, generating electricity onboard through a 1,200 kW hydrogen fuel cell system, has a design speed of 110 kmph and can carry about 2,600 passengers, making it the largest-capacity hydrogen train in the world.

  1. Parliament’s Monsoon Session 2026 Begins on July 20 [Polity / Governance]

The Monsoon Session of Parliament 2026 commenced on July 20 and will continue till August 13, 2026, comprising 19 sittings as summoned by President Droupadi Murmu on the government’s recommendation. With 28 Bills pending, the session is expected to take up the Income-tax (Amendment) Bill, the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, and the Viksit Bharat Shiksha Adhishthan Bill to replace UGC, AICTE and NCTE with a single higher-education regulator.

  1. S. Aswath Becomes India’s 98th Chess Grandmaster [Sports / Chess]

17-year-old S. Aswath from Nagercoil, Tamil Nadu, became India’s 98th Chess Grandmaster after securing his third and final GM norm at the 2026 Pune International Grandmaster Round Robin Tournament in mid-July 2026. His achievement adds to India’s fast-growing pool of Grandmasters, a rise widely credited to structured age-group coaching and the visibility generated by Viswanathan Anand’s and D. Gukesh’s successes.

Exam Tip: Keep a running count of India’s Grandmaster tally  a frequently updated one-mark sports GK question in SSC CGL, RRB and banking exams. Note the three-norm, 2500-rating requirement for the GM title under FIDE rules.

  1. MHA Data: Cyber Fraud Complaints Cross 12.7 Lakh in H1 2026 [Banking Awareness / Internal Security]

Data reviewed by the Ministry of Home Affairs showed over 12.71 lakh financial cyber-fraud complaints registered nationwide between January and June 2026, with reported losses exceeding Rs 10,178 crore. Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest number of complaints (about 1.85 lakh), while Maharashtra reported the largest financial loss. Banks placed liens on about Rs 2,969 crore of the reported amount, a recovery-intervention rate of roughly 29%.

  1. Indian Navy to Commission INS Malvan, Second Mahe-Class ASW Vessel [Defence]

The Indian Navy announced that INS Malvan, the second Mahe-class Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC), will be commissioned on July 22, 2026, at a ceremony presided over by Air Chief Marshal A.P. Singh. Built at Cochin Shipyard Limited with over 80% indigenous content, Malvan follows INS Mahe (commissioned November 2025) and is designed for anti-submarine and coastal-defence operations in shallow coastal waters.
