The third week of June 2026 was distinguished by landmark developments in naval indigenisation, international maritime law, renewable energy, digital health governance, and India’s diplomatic outreach. The 12th edition of International Yoga Day added a globally celebrated cultural dimension to an otherwise policy-intensive week. The following ten topics represent the highest-priority GK events for competitive exam aspirants.

  1. INS Dunagiri, INS Agray & INS Sanshodhak Commissioned  Indigenous Naval Milestone [Defence / Science & Technology]

Prime Minister Narendra Modi commissioned three warships  INS Dunagiri, INS Agray, and INS Sanshodhak  at Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata, on June 21, 2026, coinciding with International Yoga Day and World Hydrography Day. Prof. Bimal N. Patel Elected Judge of ITLOS for 2026–2035  India’s Maritime Diplomacy [International Affairs / Appointments]

On June 18–19, 2026, Prof. (Dr.) Bimal N. Patel was elected as a Judge of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) for the 2026–2035 term, in elections held at the United Nations in New York. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and the Permanent Mission of India to the UN hailed this as a significant milestone in India’s commitment to multilateralism and the rules-based international maritime order. Patel, a distinguished legal scholar and former Vice-Chancellor of Gujarat National Law University (GNLU), will assume office on October 1, 2026. ITLOS is an independent judicial body established by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS, 1982), which entered into force in 1994 and presently has 172 member states.   1. International Yoga Day 2026  12th Edition, Theme & Global Observance [Culture / International]

The 12th International Day of Yoga was celebrated on June 21, 2026, across 195 countries and every continent. India’s flagship national ceremony was held at Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir, with Prime Minister Modi leading the mass yoga session on the banks of Dal Lake  a deliberate symbolic affirmation of India’s sovereignty and cultural richness in the region. The 2026 theme was “Yoga for One Earth, One Health,” underscoring yoga’s contribution to holistic planetary well-being, mental health, and sustainable living. International Yoga Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly through Resolution 69/131 on December 11, 2014, following India’s initiative, and has been observed since June 21, 2015. The day coincides with the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, which holds special significance in yogic tradition.

  1. India Hosts Global Wind Day 2026 Conference in Goa  Wind Energy Targets [Environment / Energy]

India hosted the Global Wind Day 2026 Conference on June 15, 2026, in Goa, under the theme “Wind Energy: From Ambition to Acceleration.” India’s installed wind power capacity stood at 56.09 GW as of March 2026, a 2.66-fold increase from 21.04 GW in March 2014. India currently ranks 4th globally in installed wind power capacity, after China, the United States, and Germany. The nation’s ambitious target is 100 GW of wind energy by 2030 and 156 GW by 2036. India’s assessed wind power potential stands at 695.5 GW at a 120-metre hub height and 1,163.9 GW at 150 metres. States with the highest wind energy potential include Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, and Telangana.

  1. Saibal Chattopadhyay Appointed NSC Chairperson  Statistical Governance [Governance / Appointments]

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved the appointment of Saibal Chattopadhyay, former Director of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Calcutta, as Chairperson of the National Statistical Commission (NSC) in June 2026. Three part-time members  Shubhabrata Das, Satyendra Bahadur Singh, and Madhavan Mukund  were simultaneously appointed to restore the full operational strength of the NSC. The NSC was established by the Government of India through a resolution dated June 1, 2005, and became operational on July 12, 2006, based on the recommendations of the C. Rangarajan Commission (2001). The commission is structured with a part-time Chairperson, four part-time technical members, one permanent ex-officio member, and a Secretary. Its mandate covers the formulation of policies and standards for India’s statistical system, ensuring transparency and quality in official data.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded an official state visit to France, jointly inaugurating ‘Bharat Innovates 2026’ with French President Emmanuel Macron in Nice. The summit showcased 120 Indian deep-tech startups to global investors and formally adopted the India-France Innovation Roadmap 2030, a long-term framework for collaboration in emerging technologies. World Refugee Day 2026  June 20 | Record Displacement Crisis [Social Issues / International]

World Refugee Day was observed on June 20, 2026, with the theme “A Home Away from Home.” The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) reported that the number of forcibly displaced people worldwide has crossed 130 million  the highest figure ever recorded  comprising refugees, asylum seekers, and internally displaced persons (IDPs). The primary drivers of displacement include ongoing armed conflicts, climate-induced disasters, and persecution. Key refugee-hosting nations globally include Iran, Turkey, Germany, Pakistan, and Colombia. India is a non-signatory to the 1951 Refugee Convention and its 1967 Protocol; it manages refugee populations through domestic policy frameworks and case-by-case adjudication, without a dedicated domestic refugee law. The Rohingya crisis and Sri Lankan Tamil refugees remain active policy considerations for India.

The Simha 4×4 features an ab initio modular design, incorporating NATO-qualified components, enhanced mobility and protection systems, and customisable mission modules for diverse operational requirements. The Declaration constitutes a farmer-centric cooperative roadmap aimed at strengthening food security, advancing climate-resilient agriculture, promoting digital innovation in farming, ensuring seed sovereignty, and deepening agricultural cooperation among BRICS nations.   1. MHA Launches ‘Money Restoration Module’  Cybercrime Victim Relief [Governance / Digital India / Cyber Security]

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) launched the Money Restoration Module (MRM) in June 2026 as a critical enhancement to India’s cybercrime governance infrastructure. The MRM is designed to simplify and expedite the process by which victims of digital financial fraud can reclaim money that has been frozen or recovered by law enforcement agencies.
